The health areaWhy thyroid health matters

The thyroid influences metabolism, energy, weight and mood. An underactive or overactive thyroid can cause a wide range of everyday symptoms.

Thyroid markers help a clinician understand whether your thyroid is contributing to how you feel.

The gapWhat routine testing may not cover

Thyroid symptoms — fatigue, weight change, feeling cold — can have many causes. Testing helps a clinician tell whether the thyroid is involved.

A single marker may not tell the whole story; your clinician interprets results in the context of your symptoms and history.

Educational examplesRepresentative markers, explained

These are representative examples of the kinds of markers a clinician may consider in this health area. They are educational illustrations — not a confirmed catalogue, and not labelled as included, available or part of any package. Until Saathya's diagnostic catalogue is confirmed, exact tests and inclusions will be published once finalised.

  • TSH

Thyroid-stimulating hormone, the most common first thyroid test.

    May help assess:
Screens for under- and over-active thyroid.
    Cannot alone:
It does not identify the cause of a thyroid problem on its own.
  • Free T4

The main hormone produced by the thyroid gland.

    May help assess:
Adds detail when TSH is abnormal, to clarify thyroid function.
    Cannot alone:
It is interpreted alongside TSH, not in isolation.
  • Free T3

The active form of thyroid hormone.

    May help assess:
Can add context in certain thyroid investigations.
    Cannot alone:
It is not a routine first-line test and is interpreted by a clinician.

Any result is interpreted by a qualified professional in the context of your symptoms, history and other findings — never in isolation.

Your questionsAnswered

An underactive thyroid can contribute to weight gain and a slower metabolism, though it is rarely the only factor. A clinician interprets thyroid markers alongside your symptoms.
